Human Resource Capability and Performance of International Schools in Nairobi City County, Kenya

The increasing competition among international schools has heightened the importance of human resource capability as a strategic resource for achieving institutional performance. This study examined the relationship between human resource capability and the performance of international schools in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The study was anchored on the Resource-Based View, which considers valuable, rare and difficult-to-imitate resources as potential sources of competitive advantage. Human resource capability was conceptualized in terms of teacher competence, professional development, teacher motivation, and diversity and inclusion. A positivist research philosophy and correlational research design were adopted. The study targeted 58 international schools in Nairobi City County and 232 respondents selected through purposive and stratified sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. A total of 183 usable responses were obtained. The findings indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between human resource capability and school performance (r = .442, p < .001). Human resource capability also remained a statistically significant positive predictor of school performance in the multiple regression model (β = .262, p < .001). The findings indicate that teacher competence, professional development, motivation and inclusive practices constitute important resources for international schools seeking to strengthen institutional performance. The study recommends that international schools should strengthen continuous professional development, teacher recognition and mentorship systems while developing human resource strategies that promote teacher competence, motivation and retention.
